In my previous post What are Systemic Family Constellations?, I wrote about my own discovery of this fascinating modality, and the origins of it. In this post I will touch on what a systemic constellation session may look like, and who may benefit from it.
What does a constellation look (or rather...FEEL) like?
The constellation session can bring healing not only to the client setting up the constellation and their system, but also to the representatives and observers.
A constellation session can be set up individually or in a group, in person or online. The representatives may be people, or placeholders (felts, dolls, objects). To make things even more interesting, some constellations are set up openly, while others are so called "blind" (where the representatives do not know the intention or whom they represent), or even "double blind" (when even the facilitator and the client do not initially know who the representatives are).
However, the most common way to set up a constellation session is in person, in a group setting.
Once the constellation begins, the representatives are placed (often by the client) in specific positions in relation to each other, representing family members or elements in the client's system. As the constellation unfolds, representatives start to feel emotions, physical sensations or desire for movement that are not their own but belong to the person or the concept (ex addiction, illness, symptom, blockage) they represent.
Being in the position of a representative in Systemic Family Constellations can be a profound and transformative experience. When individuals volunteer to represent family members or elements in someone else's constellation, they may not know the people involved or the specific issues beforehand, but they are in service of the client's system. Often, it may not be a coincidence that they were chosen for a particular role, as it may somehow resonate with their own system. As a representative, they are encouraged to rely on their intuition and bodily sensations rather than their analytical mind or stories.
Representatives may access information about the family system like hidden dynamics or unresolved emotions that may be affecting the client or the family. They might experience emotions such as sadness, anger, or love, even though they have no personal connection to the individuals being represented.
By tuning into these sensations and emotions, representatives contribute to revealing hidden patterns and entanglements within the family system, providing valuable insights for the client. This process is not about role-playing or acting but rather tapping into the collective unconscious and the energetic connections within the family- the so-called Knowing Field.
Once the facilitator acknowledges the valuable information brought forth by the representatives, they can work with the client to explore and potentially resolve these hidden dynamics with healing movements and healing sentences. It is important to note that while representatives may experience strong emotions during the constellation, they are encouraged (and usually able to) easily release those feelings once the process is complete, allowing themselves to return to their own emotional state.
Overall, serving as a representative in a constellation can be a deeply empathetic and transformative experience, offering a unique opportunity to gain insights into the complexities of family systems and the interplay of emotions and relationships within them.
After a constellation, participants often experience a deep sense of peace, connection, compassion, and resolution, fostering a pathway towards greater emotional well-being and harmony within their family and personal relationships. They can say YES to their own life path, not being burdened by carrying their ancestral traumas and entanglements, in that process bringing healing to their whole system.
Who may benefit from Systemic Constellations?
Deciding if Systemic Constellations are right for you depends on several factors and personal considerations. Here are some signs that this modality may be a good fit for you:
Interest in Family Dynamics: If you have a curiosity about your family history, relationships, and how past experiences may be influencing your present, Systemic Constellations can offer valuable insights.
Recurring Life Challenges: If you find yourself facing repetitive patterns or issues in your personal or professional life that seem difficult to overcome, exploring the underlying family dynamics through constellations could be beneficial.
Desire for Personal Growth: If you are committed to personal development and open to exploring and understanding aspects of yourself that might be hidden or unconscious, constellations can provide a transformative space for growth.
Willingness to Engage Emotionally: Systemic Family Constellations can evoke strong emotions as participants tap into family dynamics and entanglements. Being open to engaging with and processing emotions is essential for this process.
Interest in Alternative Approaches: If you are interested in holistic or alternative therapeutic methods that integrate mind, body, and emotions, constellations might resonate with you.
Seeking Resolution and Healing: If you are looking for resolution, healing, or closure regarding past traumas or unresolved family issues, Systemic Constellations can offer a pathway towards addressing these concerns.
